How does health insurance work in the different cantons?
In some large cantons, health insurance costs can vary from place to place. These variations are due to the different regions; these cantons can be split into two or three regions, defined by the Federal Department of Home Affairs (DHA). The DFI also defines the maximum deviation applicable between the different regions of a canton.
The cantons divided into two regions are: Valais, Vaud, Ticino, Schaffhausen
The cantons divided into three regions are: St. Gallen, Zurich, Lucerne, Berne and Graubünden
As previously stated, the difference in health insurance premiums between regions is governed by the DFI, the maximum differences between regions are as follows:
- 15% maximum difference between region 1 and 2
- 10% maximum difference between region 2 and 3
As a result, a person's insurance premiums depend not only on their canton of residence but also on their region.
What do health insurance premiums by canton depend on?
Health insurance premiums, paid monthly or annually by the insured, depend solely on the following three criteria:
- The age of the insured: Often distinguished into three age brackets (0-18, 19-26 and +26years)
- The deductible taken out by the insured: Varies from 0 to 600 francs for children and from 300 to 2,500 francs for adults
- The insured's canton of residence
Is it possible to reduce health insurance premiums in your canton?
In order to reduce your health insurance premiums, there are several solutions available to you. By comparing the various basic insurance companies (LAMal) you are free to choose the company offering the most advantageous premiums.
Then, by choosing a suitable model (e.g. family doctor) and a high deductible, your premiums will also fall.
Finally, don't take out accident insurance if you work more than 8 hours a week. In this case your employer will insure you for accident risk.
