Health problems abroad: What is reimbursed by basic health insurance?

In principle, basic health insurance is only valid on Swiss territory. However, there are a few exceptions, as shown below:
  • During a stay abroad, in the event of an emergency, the insured person is covered for the cost of medical treatment up to twice the amount the insurance company would pay for the same treatment in Switzerland. The insured must pay the excess himself/herself if he/she has not taken out supplementary insurance.
  • In the case of medical treatment that cannot be provided in Switzerland, the insurance company will contribute a limited amount towards the cost.
  • In the event of a stay in the European Union, the coverage enshrined in the country's bilateral agreements applies.
Please note: Rescue or repatriation are not covered by basic insurance.

What is reimbursed by worldwide supplementary insurance?

If you're looking for coverage in the event of a medical emergency abroad, it's essential to take out supplementary insurance.
As previously stated, basic health insurance coverage is unfortunately insufficient. In the case of repatriation to Switzerland, for example, the policyholder will be billed for up to several thousand francs out of pocket, unless he or she has taken out supplementary insurance.
With supplementary insurance, the insurance covers all medical, hospitalization and repatriation costs, with no limit on the amount or deductible.

How much does worldwide top-up insurance cost?

The majority of companies offer worldwide coverage for medical and hospitalization costs starting from CHF 10 per month. Nevertheless, in order to benefit from the best coverage at an attractive rate, it's important to compare all the offers on the market.
